Is It Safe to Run with Weak Pelvic Muscles? Answers Inside.

Running with pelvic floor weakness
Running with pelvic floor weakness

Question:

I am 37 years old have had a triple level spinal fusion in 2013. Then in 2023 i had a radical hysterectomy. I have very weak pelvic floor muscles that causes stress incontinence. I am working on strengthening it. Can you please tell me if running is good or bad for the pelvic floor weakness? I tried a bit of running prior to starting the exercises, but felt it got worse, i would love to do both if its not going to hinder my progress. Thanks for your time.

Answer:

It is good that you have started some pelvic strengthening exercises. I think that is THE most important for you to first target and improve on before concentrating on the running.

Running is ok even with weak pelvic floors, however when you run and your muscles start to fatigue, you will probably notice that your pelvic floor muscles are also fatiguing and therefore more likely to give way (such as stress incontinence). So therefore I would highly encourage you to strengthen your pelvic floors first and SLOWLY progress your running (start gentle with minimal fatigue and gradually increase intensity as your pelvic floor muscles get stronger).
